Tip #1: Talk to the Optician

Let them know if you need new eyeglasses for work, play, or special occasions. If you already wear glasses, tell them what you like and don’t like about your current pair. And let them know if you need to stick to a budget.

Tip #2: Start with Your Prescription

A lot of people are surprised to learn that not all frames fit all prescriptions. Being near- or farsighted can affect the thickness of your lens, which may not fit in certain frames.

Progressive lenses, which allow for near, middle, and distance viewing all in one lens, have to be large enough to accommodate each vision gradient. That means you can’t go with frames with small lenses. Your optician can direct you to styles that will work well with your prescription.

Tip #3: Have an Open Mind

Point out frames that caught your eye right away. These early favorites will help the optician make informed suggestions. But be open to a range of styles. You never know what’s going to look good on you until you put them on!

Tip #4: Find a Great Fit

Before you commit to one frame, your optician will want to make sure it’s a good fit for your face. After all, you don't want to deal with your glasses sliding down or pinching your nose! They’ll look for adequate space between the sides of your head and the temples of the frame. A pencil’s width is ideal.

They’ll also check that the frame reaches a quarter to halfway down the ear — the sweet spot for a good fit. Finally, the optician will watch you while you talk and smile. Sounds silly, but this final check shows them that the frames will stay put.

You’re done! All that’s left to do is enjoy your great new glasses!
