With softer, fuller facial features, eyeglasses can add a nice definition that makes your face pop.

The right eyeglasses for you are the ones that help you see clearly and feel confident, no matter the shape or style. But it can be fun to pick frames that complement your unique facial features. (Read our quick and easy guide to find out your face shape!)

Having a round face means you have soft features, instead of sharp ones. This often refers to people who have a round forehead and jawline, with less-angular cheekbones in between.

If that sounds like you, it’s important to know you have a lot of frame options that can accentuate those features and play up your style. Here’s what you should keep in mind when buying frames to suit your face shape.

1. Balance out softer features

Opposites attract. That means round face shapes are often best suited to more angular glasses, like rectangular or square frames. Their sharper corners and straight lines can add structure that look striking against your more subtle facial features.

“If you have a round face, rectangular or geometric frames can add definition to your face,” recommends Natalie Martin, a Tampa, Florida–based optician and regional learning specialist for National Vision.

2. Think carefully about choosing a round style

On the contrary, choosing circle or oval eyeglass frames may make your face look rounder, Martin says. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. But you may miss out on the opportunity to use your frames to help create the illusion of sharper, more defined facial features.

3. Consider the width of your frames

Choosing frame styles that tend to be a bit wider than your face can make it naturally look longer. However, opting for smaller frames may have the opposite effect. The smaller the frames, the shorter and fuller your face will look around them.

4. Don't shy away from stand-out frames

Feel empowered to go bold with your eyeglass choice. It might seem overwhelming, or it might feel a bit out of your comfort zone. That’s OK. If you try on a few pairs, you may be surprised to learn you love the way they contrast against the natural softness of your face shape.

5. Decide on rimmed versus rimless frames

Another choice to make: Full versus semi-rimless glasses. Full means that the frame goes all the way around the lenses. Semi-rimless means that the tops of the lenses are covered with a frame, but the bottoms of the lens are exposed.

Picking a full-rimmed frame can add some definition to your cheekbones, but rimless can often elongate the face. If you’re up in the air, it doesn’t hurt to try on both, just to see what you like best.

6. Consider your cheekbones

Pay attention to where your frames sit in relation to your cheekbones. Frames that sit lower on your face (below your cheekbones) may look and feel too big for your face. Aim for eyeglasses where the bottom of the frame lands right above your cheekbone. This will help accentuate them.
